Suspension & Steering Repair in Metairie

Metairie streets are rough on a car. If yours clunks over bumps, wanders on Veterans or the steering feels loose, bring it by and we'll find out what's worn.

Signs something's worn

  • A clunk or knock when you go over bumps, potholes or the railroad tracks
  • The car bounces or floats after a dip instead of settling down
  • The front end dives hard when you brake
  • Steering feels loose, has play in it, or the car wanders and you keep correcting it
  • A whine or groan when you turn the wheel, or the steering gets heavy
  • Power steering fluid spots under the front of the car

Between potholes, patched streets and the drainage work around Metairie, suspension parts here take a beating. Most of the time it wears out slowly, so you get used to it and don't notice how bad it's gotten until it's fixed.

What we check

We get the car up and go through the front and rear: shocks and struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, sway bar links, CV axles and boots, and the power steering pump, rack and hoses. We'll show you what's worn, tell you what's a safety issue and what can wait, and you decide what gets done.

Replacing tie rods, ball joints or control arms changes the alignment, so the car will need an alignment afterward. We'll go over that with you when we write up the estimate.

Estimates, warranty and financing

Estimates are free, and you get one in writing before any work starts. Qualifying repairs are covered by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty, and financing is available for qualifying repairs if the bill is more than you planned on this month.

Questions we get

What's the difference between shocks and struts?

Both control how the car bounces. A strut is also part of the suspension that holds the car up, so it's a bigger job. Most cars have struts up front and either shocks or struts in the back. We'll tell you which yours has.

Is a clunking noise over bumps dangerous?

It depends on what's causing it. A worn sway bar link is mostly annoying. A worn ball joint or tie rod can affect steering. Either way, it's worth having it looked at soon so it doesn't get worse.

Why does my steering wheel whine when I turn?

Often the power steering fluid is low from a leak, or the pump is wearing out. Some newer cars have electric power steering with no fluid at all. We check which system you have and go from there.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

If we replace parts that affect steering angles, like tie rods, ball joints or control arms, yes. We'll tell you up front.
