Check Engine Light On? We'll Find Out Why.

A code tells us where to start, not what's broken. We read the code, test what it points to, and explain what we found before anything gets replaced.

Solid or flashing?

A solid light means the car's computer has seen a problem and stored a code. It's usually safe to drive for a short time, but get it checked soon. Small problems like a misfire or a bad sensor can turn into bigger ones if you ignore them.

A flashing light usually means the engine is misfiring badly. Unburned fuel can overheat and ruin the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part. If yours is flashing, ease off, get off the road when it's safe, and call us at (504) 780-9804.

How we diagnose it

First we connect a scan tool and read the stored codes and the data behind them. Then we test. A code for an oxygen sensor, for example, can be caused by the sensor, the wiring, a vacuum leak or a fuel problem. Replacing parts based on a code alone is how people end up spending money without fixing anything, so we confirm the cause before we recommend a repair.

Once we know what's wrong, we'll tell you what it is, what it takes to fix and whether it's urgent. You decide what happens next.

Common causes we see

  • A loose or worn gas cap (it really does happen)
  • Oxygen sensors and air-fuel ratio sensors
  • Misfires from spark plugs, ignition coils or injectors
  • EVAP system leaks
  • Mass airflow sensor problems
  • Catalytic converter efficiency codes

Bring it to Utica Street

We see check engine lights every day from drivers all over Metairie, Kenner and the rest of Jefferson Parish. Book online or call and tell us when the light came on and whether the car is running any differently. That helps us get started faster.

Questions we get

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

If it's solid and the car drives normally, you can usually drive it in to get checked. If it's flashing, or the car is running rough, losing power or overheating, stop driving and call us.

The parts store read my code for free. Isn't that enough?

A code read tells you which system flagged a problem. It doesn't tell you which part failed. We test to find the actual cause so you're not paying for parts you didn't need.

Will the light come back after the repair?

If the cause is fixed, it should stay off. Some systems need a few drive cycles to finish their self-tests. If it comes back, call us and we'll take another look.
