Timing Belt Replacement in Metairie

A timing belt usually gives no warning before it breaks, and on a lot of engines a broken belt means serious engine damage. Replacing it on schedule costs a lot less than what happens if it snaps.

What the timing belt does

The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning together, so the valves open and close at the right moment. Some engines use a metal timing chain instead, which is meant to last much longer. Some use a belt. If you're not sure which your car has, call us with the year, make, model and engine size and we'll tell you.

Why it matters so much

Many engines are what's called "interference" engines. If the belt breaks while the engine is running, the pistons can hit the valves. That can bend valves and damage the cylinder head, which turns a planned maintenance job into an engine repair. On other engines a broken belt just leaves you stranded. Neither one is a good day.

When it's due

Your owner's manual lists the timing belt interval, usually in miles and in years, whichever comes first. The years part matters. Rubber ages even if the car doesn't get driven much, and heat speeds that up. If you bought the car used and don't know whether it was done, it's worth finding out.

Signs to pay attention to

  • You're at or past the interval in the manual and have no record of it being done
  • A ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
  • Oil or coolant leaking near the front of the engine, which can ruin a belt early
  • The engine cranks but won't start (stop trying and call us)

Often there are no signs at all. That's why the interval matters.

What gets replaced with it

On many engines, getting to the timing belt means taking apart a lot of the front of the engine. Parts like the tensioner, idler pulleys and sometimes the water pump sit right there, and they wear on a similar schedule. When we write your estimate, we'll tell you which of those parts make sense to replace on your engine at the same time and why, so you can decide.

Questions we get

How do I know if my car has a timing belt or a timing chain?

Your owner's manual will usually say, or call (504) 780-9804 with your year, make, model and engine size and we'll look it up.

Can I wait until it starts making noise?

It's not a good idea. Timing belts often break without any warning, and on many engines that causes expensive internal damage.

Should the water pump be replaced at the same time?

On a lot of engines the timing belt drives the water pump, and the labor overlaps. We'll tell you whether it makes sense on your car and put it on the estimate as a separate line so you can decide.
